Snake: Quick Guide and Game Info

Snake has become a classic household game, thanks to your old cell phone. You know, the one you had before smartphones became a thing. It was one of the first games on your phone that had you competing against your friends to see who could get the highest score. Now you can play it on my site, thanks to a cherished person who wanted to see the game added here. Some might say she begged for it, some might not.

It’s a pretty simple game where you steer Marty, the snake, towards the apples using the arrow keys or WASD on desktop, or swiping and touch controls on tablets and mobile devices.

About Our Snake Game

Snake is our first game on the site that doesn’t fit into any of the current categories. It marks the beginning of an upcoming category that I’d like to call Arcade Games, or something along those lines.

In this game, we’ve used a bit of witchcraft (or coding) to turn Marty into a snake. Your mission is to guide him towards as many apples as he can eat, with the ultimate goal of filling the board. With each apple he eats, he grows a little longer instead of fatter.

I’ve decided to include three options for speed and board size, so you can adjust the game to your liking. Your highest scores during each game session is recorded, and you’ll see it whenever you choose to start a new game. You also have the option to decide whether Marty can pass through walls or not.
I hope you like it!

How to Play Snake

Use the arrow keys or WASD if you’re playing on a laptop or desktop and swipe and steer on touch devices.Β
Guide Marty towards the apples scattered around the game. Each apple gives you one point. After ten apples a glowing orange appears and then you have 8 seconds to get it which will give you 5 points.Β

Snake Strategy

Even though Snake isn’t big on strategies there are few things that can help you along the way. Think beyond one apple is a simple plan where you don’t always take the shortest route to the next apple. Sometimes it’s better to steer it in a way that creates more room for the next apple. And even though it’s tempting to always get the orange it sometimes isn’t worth it if it’s not near and Marty has become particularly long. And like in so many games, just try to keep it cool.Β

A Little Bit of Snake History

Even though Snake is today mostly remembered as the game you played on your Nokie phone, it’s story actually began long before the days of mobile phones.Β

One of its earliest ancestors was Blockade, an arcade game released by Gremlin Industries in 1976. Two players controlled moving lines that left permanent trails behind them. The aim was to avoid crashing into a wall or one of those trails while trying to outlast your opponent. Which is basically the same core idea of the game we see today.Β

Similar games appeared on arcade machines and home computers over the following years. The concept proved easy to adapt, and variations gradually introduced familiar features such as collecting food and growing longer.

But what brought Snake to the world scene was the version introduced in 1997 when Finnish developer, Taneli Armanto created a version for Nokia 6110. The phone had a tiny monochrome screen and a handful of buttons, but that was more than enough for a game with such a simple idea.

The games’ popularity grew with Nokia’s increased sales and Snake version were also in their 3210 and 3310 phones. In the early mobile phone gaming era Snake was kind of the game.Β

Decades later, the graphics may be more colourful and screens considerably larger but the basic challenge remains unchcanged.Β
