Fun Facts About Board and Dice Games

Checkers

Checkers has actually been solved by computers. In 2007, researchers announced that with perfect play from both sides, a standard game ends in a draw. Don't expect Martimus to make achieving that draw easy, though!

Yatzy

Yatzy belongs to a much older family of five-dice games that includes Yacht. The familiar idea of keeping some dice, rerolling others and trying to complete scoring combinations existed before today's Yatzy, which became particularly popular across the Nordic countries.

Shut the Box

Nobody knows exactly where Shut the Box originated. Stories link it to Normandy, the Channel Islands, sailors and fishermen, although much of its early history is folklore. What we do know is that it had found a home in British pubs by the 1960s.

Strategy, Luck and Risk

Plan Ahead

Games like Checkers, Gomoku and Four in a Row reward you for looking beyond your immediate move. A strong position can be more valuable than grabbing the first opportunity you see.

Know When to Take a risk

Pig and Shut the Box ask you to decide whether to keep pushing your luck or protect what you've already earned. Sometimes the safest move wins; sometimes you need one more roll.

Make the Dice Work for You

Yatzy combines luck with decision-making. You can't control what you roll, but you can decide which dice to keep and which scoring combinations are worth chasing.
