War is one of the simplest and most iconic card games ever created. It’s a game of pure chance where every flip of the card can change the outcome. Easy to learn and quick to play, War has been enjoyed by card players for generations.
On our site you can play the traditional way, where the goal is to collect the entire deck, or switch to a 50-point game. In the points version you earn 1 point for every normal round you win and 3 points when you win a War. Perfect for quick matches or longer sessions against the computer. Free, simple, and great for all ages!
game layout and setup
The game uses a standard 52-card deck, shuffled and split evenly between you and your opponent, general Marty.
Cards are dealt face down into two piles. Each turn both players reveal the top card. Higher rank wins the cards (Ace is highest).
When the ranks match, War begins, meaning each player puts three cards face down and one face up, and the higher face-up card takes the whole pile. The interface clearly shows the piles, current scores, and War moments so everything stays easy to follow. In 50 point version the score is clearly shown for each player.
how to play war
War rules are as simple as can be for a card game.
- Each player flips the top card of their pile.
- The higher card wins both cards and adds them to the discard pile.
- If the cards are equal, it is War. Each player places three cards face down and one face up. The higher of those face-up cards wins the entire set of cards.
- In classic mode the game continues until one player has every card.
- In the 50-point mode you score 1 point for a normal win and 3 points for winning a War. First to 50 points wins.
War requires no strategy, just a little patience and plenty of luck.

Since winning at War is purely a luck game it basically depends on the game mode you choose:
Classic
- Collect every card in the deck to win the game.
50 Points
- Earn 1 point for each round you win.
- Win a War to earn 3 points.
- The first player to reach 50 points wins.
Every War can quickly swing the score, so even a close game can change in an instant.
