Shut the Box is a classic dice game that’s equal parts luck and strategy. The goal is simple: flip down all the tiles (or as many as possible) by matching the numbers you roll. It’s relaxing yet surprisingly addictive. Perfect for a quick solo session or a friendly showdown.
On our site, you can play the traditional 9-tile (Classic) version or the extended 12-tile (Long) version for a bigger challenge. Choose Solo mode to beat your own best score, or compete against Marty in one-off games or best of three. Two dice are used at the start, but you can automatically switch to one die once all tiles 7 and higher are shut.

game layout and setup
Clean and intuitive layout:
- Tiles numbered 1 through 9 (Classic) or 1 through 12 (Long) in the main game area.
- Clickable tiles that get darker when you use them.
- Two dice (with the option to use just one later).
- Current roll total displayed under neath the tiles.
- In Solo mode: Your best score (lowest remaining total) appears in the header and updates live during your session.
- In Vs Marty mode: Pick one-off or best of three.
Everything is touch-friendly and easy to follow.
how to play shut the box
Shut the Box is easy to pick up:
- Roll the two dice and add up the total.
- Flip down any combination of open tiles that exactly match your roll total. For example if you roll an 8, you could close: 8, 5 + 3, 6 + 2 or 4 + 3 + 1
- Keep rolling and shutting tiles until you can’t make a move or all tiles are closed.
- Once tiles 7, 8, 9 (and 10-12 in Long mode) are shut, you get the option to switch to one die for more precise control.
- Your score is the sum of any remaining open tiles. Lower is better and 0 is a perfect shut!
In Solo, try to beat your personal best. Against Marty, first to win the required rounds takes the match.

Winning Shut the Box is all about smart tile choices and knowing when to take risks:
- Use high rolls to close big numbers early.
- Save flexible low-number combinations for later.
- Switch to one die as soon as it’s available, it often makes closing those final tricky tiles much easier.
- In longer 12-tile games, plan ahead because the board stays open longer.

a little bit of Shut the Box history
Shut the Box dates back several centuries and is believed to have originated in Normandy, France. It was traditionally played with a wooden box that had hinged tiles or levers. Sailors and pub-goers loved it because it was compact and fun for groups or solo play.
The game spread across Europe and eventually became a favorite in England and America. Different regions use 9 or 12 numbers, which is why we offer both Classic and Long versions. Its simple rules and satisfying “shut” mechanic have kept it popular for generations.
